Class And Understanding

This book of historic arithmetic was compiled to allow the budding students of our time to remember the importance of class and understanding peoples place in a society, helping them prepare for the future through their education.

During the prosperous reign of emperor Justinian, chariot racing was popular

In Rome. For any one match, 7% of the city’s 1.2 million citizens would

Try to attend.

The sport was held in the coliseum, which could seat 50,000 people.

How many people would not be

Allowed to attend?

This sport was called the Danes. There were two factions of the Danes,

The Greens and Blues. They were 50/50 in the Roman peasantry.

80% of Rome’s population were considered peasants.

If all the Blue’s peasant fans showed up first for the Danes, how many Green’s

Peasant fans would be

Allowed to attend?

Seven Green or Blue peasant fans were caught in a brawl that lead to

Assault upon a noble. They were sentenced to hanging. Two escaped and

Took shelter in a parish; the city guard prepared to

Starve them out.

The parish was stocked with 17.5 days of food for the 2 priests. Now the church was

Feeding four peasants. Starving to death takes 3 days without food.

How long would it take for the occupants to die?

During the next Danes game, the Blues and Greens came together to

Beg mercy for their comrades to the emperor. Justinian refused.

More peasants invaded the Coliseum to beg. 500 peasants broke in every ten minutes.

The emperor was forced to withdraw after 2 hours.

How many peasants were needed to

Force the emperor to withdraw?

The peasants grew angry at the glorious emperor, and took up fire against him. The

City began to burn by their mud-stricken fingers. People trying to put out the fire were

Fought off by the riot. Rome had 400,000 structures. Each hour, the amount of

Houses burning went up by 25%. 1450 houses were burning when the riot started.

How much of Rome would be

destroyed after 48 hours?

General Belisarius was rightly ordered by Justinian to quell the

Rebellion.

His forces blockaded the coliseum, trapping the peasants inside.

His 4500 soldiers could kill 2 peasants each 7 minutes while holding their line.

Only 700 soldiers were able to reach the peasants.

There were 30,000 peasants to kill. After twenty minutes, how many

peasants were left to kill?
